What is Cardology?

A plain-English introduction to the system that links every birthday to a playing card.

Cardology in one sentence

Cardology is a system that matches every birthday to one of the 52 cards in an ordinary deck of playing cards, and uses that card, called your birth card, as a lens for thinking about your personality, relationships and the cycles of your life.

Why playing cards?

Supporters of Cardology point to some neat patterns between a deck of cards and the calendar:

These patterns are real, but they’re symbolic. They don’t prove that cards and birthdays are connected. They’re the reason the system feels meaningful to the people who use it.

Where does it come from?

The modern form of Cardology is usually traced to the late 1800s, through the work of Olney H. Richmond and a group called the Order of the Magi. It became more widely known in the 1990s through books by Robert Lee Camp, who popularised the term “destiny cards”. Today it’s used much like astrology or numerology: as a tool for self-reflection.

What can your birth card tell you?

Your birth card is read for themes rather than facts. Its suit points to an area of life, and its number or face points to a quality or lesson. Together they’re used to reflect on:

More than one card

The birth card is just one part of the full system. Cardology also uses a planetary ruling card based on your star sign, Karma Cards, and spreads where the whole deck is laid out in traditional patterns to give life path cards and a new set of cards each year. This website focuses on your birth card, your planet year and the timing of your 52-day periods. It doesn’t cover the other cards.

Is Cardology accurate?

Cardology isn’t a science, and there’s no evidence that birth cards predict personality or events. Everyone born on the same day gets the same card. The best way to use it is as a set of prompts: read a theme and ask whether it fits your life right now. If it doesn’t, let it go.
