About birth cards
What is a birth card?
In Cardology, your birth card is believed to represent your core personality, natural gifts, challenges and life themes, based on the playing card associated with your date of birth.
Think of it as a symbolic blueprint for understanding yourself. Rather than simply telling you what kind of person you are, Cardology tries to explore why you might behave in certain ways, what you tend to struggle with, and what you can learn throughout your life.
Every birthday matches one of the 52 cards in an ordinary deck of playing cards. The suit points to an area of life and the number or face points to a theme.
What your birth card can tell you
- Your core personality. Your perceived natural tendencies, temperament, motivations and the way you approach life and relationships.
- Your gifts and strengths. The qualities your card symbolises, such as creativity, communication, leadership, intuition, adaptability or a desire for stability.
- Your challenges and shadow side. Potential patterns to reflect on, such as fear of rejection, overthinking, control, restlessness, avoidance or difficulty trusting others. The particular interpretation depends on the card.
- Your relationships and compatibility. How your card is traditionally interpreted in terms of love, friendship, emotional needs, attraction and interpersonal dynamics.
- Your life lessons and direction. Recurring themes you might explore, the qualities you may be encouraged to develop, and ways to use your strengths more consciously.
- Your personal timing and cycles. In more comprehensive Cardology systems, your birth card is also used alongside yearly spreads, planetary cards and shorter cycles to explore the themes associated with different periods of your life.
How is a birth card worked out?
Take your birth month as a number (January is 1, December is 12) and use this formula:
55 − (2 × month + day)
The result is a number from 1 to 52. Count through the deck in suit order: Hearts are 1 to 13, Clubs 14 to 26, Diamonds 27 to 39 and Spades 40 to 52, each running Ace, 2 to 10, Jack, Queen, King.
For example, 14 February gives 55 − (2 × 2 + 14) = 37. That’s the 11th card of Diamonds, so the birth card is the Jack of Diamonds.
What do the four suits mean?
- Hearts: love, family, friendships and feelings.
- Clubs: ideas, learning and communication.
- Diamonds: money, work and the things you value.
- Spades: work, health and wisdom.

Which birthday has the Joker?
31 December is the only birthday that gives 0 in the formula, so it takes the Joker. The Joker is said to carry a little of every card: adaptable, playful and hard to pin down.
What is a planet year?
Each year from one birthday to the next is given a planet, in a fixed order that repeats every seven years: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. This calculator takes the planet from your age. Divide your age by 7 and the remainder tells you which planet your year falls under. A remainder of 0 is a Mercury year, 1 is Venus, and so on up to 6 for Neptune.
What are the seven periods of the year?
Your year is also split into seven periods of 52 days, starting on your birthday and running in the same planet order. Each one has a theme, such as Venus for relationships and home, Jupiter for growth and opportunity, and Saturn for hard work and health. The calculator shows the dates of your periods and marks the one you’re in today.
Is Cardology accurate?
Cardology isn’t a science, and the planet names are labels rather than anything to do with where the real planets are. Everyone born on the same day gets the same card and dates. It works best as a prompt for reflection: read each theme and ask whether it fits what’s going on for you.
